Question:
We are creating digital copies of all our SDS Sheets. I was wondering if supplements need SDS Sheets or are they exempt? Examples: Denamarin Advanced, RX Vitamins, and Standard Process supplements...
Answer:
In most cases, no, supplements don't need SDS sheets. A few notes:
- Supplements are regulated as food by the FDA. (Reference: FDA - Dietary Supplements)
- Per 1910.1200(b)(6)(vi), food is not subject to the Hazard Communication Standard (see here).
- A final consideration—SDSs would be needed if the supplements themselves pose a health hazard. For example, if ingestion of small or trace amounts can cause illness, that could pose a risk of cross-contamination.
- When in doubt, look up the supplement's SDS. The manufacturer or distributor will specify whether one is not required.
