Question: We have people at our clinic who are required to be human CPR/first aid certified. Are they required to take bloodborne pathogen training?
Answer:
Bloodborne pathogen training is only required for employees that are expected to come into contact with human blood or other potentially infectious material during the course of their job functions. Ordinarily, this would not include veterinary professionals.
However, if the employees in question are identified by the employer as responsible for rendering medical assistance as part of their job duties, then they are required to have BBP training. OSHA states that exposure to human blood or OPIM could occur during an emergency response and therefore the Bloodborne Pathogen Standard applies. (Reference Question 1 from this letter of interpretation from OSHA).
