Audience: Medical and dental practices subject to HIPAA
In June 2025, a federal court has blocked major parts of the 2024 HIPAA Privacy Final Rule that were intended to enhance protections around reproductive health information (RHI). This ruling affects healthcare providers nationwide.
What You Need to Know
The blocked provisions have been unenforceable since June 18, 2025.
You do not need to implement the RHI-related changes at this time.
Your existing HIPAA policies remain valid.
Substance use disorder updates in the same rule were not blocked and still apply.
HHS may appeal the decision by August 18, 2025, so changes are still possible.
State privacy laws may still apply. Check your state requirements.
Recommended Action
If you've already updated your policies or workflows based on the April 2024 HIPAA rule, consider adding a disclaimer noting that RHI-related provisions are on hold due to the court ruling.
